Clinic History

The Arkansas Allergy Clinic was established in 1930 by Alan G. Cazort, M.D., considered the "Father of Allergy" in Arkansas and one of the pioneer clinical allergists in the United States. His association with the clinic ended with his death on August 14, 1986.

Dr. Cazort was born in Lamar, Arkansas, one of eleven children. Having been raised in a rural environment, he developed a love for the outdoors and botany early in his life. Upon his graduation from Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas, in 1922 and from the Arkansas College of Medicine in Little Rock in 1928, he took clinic apprenticeships in the offices of experts in the field of allergy, as formal allergy teaching programs were uncommon at that time. Having asthma himself, he had an insider's perspective on both disease and the treatments available.

Upon completion of his studies, Dr. Cazort began a practice in Arkansas limited to allergy. Combining an investigative approach to allergy and a disenchantment with the commercial extracts then available, Dr. Cazort used his knowledge of botany and chemistry to collect antigens and to prepare his own extracts for testing and treatment. He was a pioneer in establishing effective doses of adrenalin to treat asthmatics and in determining its effect on blood pressure and vital capacity. His article about penicillin allergy was published in the Journal of the Arkansas Medical Society, one of the earliest published articles on this topic. The same would be said for his articles about house dust allergy.

Dr. Cazort's first office was located in the Donaghey Building in downtown Little Rock. Over the years since then the practice has grown and gradually evolved into the Arkansas Allergy and Asthma Clinic, P.A. After several moves over the past years, the clinic has been located at 10310 West Markham Street, Suite 222, in Little Rock, since 1986. A North Little Rock office was opened in 1983, and is currently located at 2504 McCain Boulevard, Suite 118. There is also a satellite clinic established in Conway.

Dr. Cazort was a pioneer in allergy, but also a humane and compassionate physician of the old school. The six physicians of the Arkansas Allergy and Asthma Clinic, all of whom are Board Certified allergists, specializing in the problems related to allergy and clinical immunology, have tried to maintain the same traditions of service and quality patient care that Dr. Cazort started over 60 years ago.
