HELPING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WHEN DEALING WITH SKIN CONDITIONS?

Skin Allergies

There are many possible causes of skin rashes and irritation. When an allergen is responsible for triggering an immune system, it can create allergic skin conditions such as eczema or hives. If you or a loved one has one of these symptoms, the key is to control itching and avoid triggers when possible.

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition typically caused by allergies in which the skin becomes red, itchy, and develops into an allergy rash. Eczema affects 1 in 5 infants and also around 1 in 50 adults. This type of skin condition often appears on the front of the elbows, behind the knees, on the face of young children, or the hands of adults. Our doctors can help you control your itch and identify which allergens you need to avoid and treat to manage your symptoms. Common triggers of eczema are rough clothes, exposure to allergens, sweating, using irritating products, local skin infections, or getting emotionally upset.

Hives are red, itchy, swollen areas of the skin. They appear when the immune system releases histamine and creates a skin irritation. There are two primary types of hives, acute and chronic. Acute hives will last for a few days up to a couple of weeks. These can be triggered by particular foods, contact with allergens, medications, insect stings, or infections. Chronic hives are often difficult to find the cause and can last for much longer; sometimes, they can occur for months or years. If foods or medication triggers your hives, avoidance is the only method of treatment. For the treatment of symptoms, antihistamines are used to treat recurrent episodes.
